The Metamorphosis Foundation for Internet and Society in association with the European Fact-Checking Standards Network and other participating organizations have launched the Climate Facts Europe database, supported by the European Climate Foundation. The project aims to increase cross-border cooperation in detecting and debunking climate disinformation while promoting access to verified climate information.
Climate Facts Europe is a multi-layered project that features a searchable database for the European public to access fact-checked climate disinformation. The project also includes an alert system designed to notify participating fact-checking organizations and the European Climate Foundation about viral, cross-border climate disinformation campaigns and narratives.
In addition, seven organizations selected by the participating members will produce four longer-form reports using the transboundary data that will be published once a month and will address a wide range of climate topics.
The Metamorphosis Foundation will also produce an author’s report at the end of the project, which will analyze the conspiracy theories regarding climate disinformation in the Western Balkans, addressing both thematic specificities and disinformation narratives in the six countries in the region: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Montenegro, and which will further analyze the differences in climate disinformation spreading in the region and the European Union member states. This report will be one of four longer reports that will result from this project, and will use cross-border data submitted by participants in the fact-checking database.
“Over the past few months, we have already seen that climate-related disinformation is one of the main topics marking the European elections, and this is not only affecting the political debate, but also discussions on specific issues such as public health or civil liberties. With Climate Facts Europe we will be able to analyze this phenomenon in depth and raise the alarm when we detect the emergence of false narratives,” said Carlos Hernández-Echevarría, President of the EFCSN Board of Directors.
In the meantime, stay informed about climate disinformation trends and subscribe to EFCSN’s newsletter, where we will share climate disinformation narratives that we identify and debunk using the database.
Climate Facts Europe is a joint project of the European Fact-Checking Standards Network, the METAMORPHOSIS FOUNDATION and other participating organizations, supported by the European Climate Foundation.
