The openness of local government units towards citizens is crucial for good governance at the local level, as it encourages transparency, accountability, and active participation of citizens, leading to more efficient and responsible decision-making. Such transparency is particularly important in the fight against corruption, as it enables public oversight and reduces the scope for abuses and illegal activities.

This November, through four online meetings, the Metamorphosis Foundation for Internet and Society and the Rural Coalition promoted the Self-Evaluation Checklist for the Openness of Local Self-Government Units. The list is based on the methodology of the Local Government Openness Index and is an instrument through which local government units will be able to independently self-assess their openness, which will allow them to more easily and continuously monitor and detect their weaknesses and shortcomings, as well as obtain a clearer picture of proactive transparency and its role in good governance. You can download the list here.

Representatives from local self-governments from all eight planning regions participated in the meetings, where they had the opportunity to become familiar with the latest findings from the Local Government Openness Index and the “Self-Evaluation Checklist for the Openness of Local Self-Government Units,” followed by a space for discussion and questions from the participants.

These activities are made possible with the support of the Government of Switzerland, through the Civica Mobilitas program within the project “Digital transformation at local level — Engaged community for corruption resilience (DIGILOC)” implemented by the Metamorphosis Foundation for Internet and Society in partnership with Rural Coalition and Center for Social Innovations Blink 42-21.
