Within the framework of the project “Ensuring the Integration of the Western Balkans into the Digital Single Market,” which aims to advance digital rights standards in the Western Balkans region and support its integration into the single digital market, on April 24, 2025, the Metamorphosis Foundation organized a one-day training on the topic “Implications of the EU Digital Services Act for Civil Society Organizations and Investigative Journalists in North Macedonia.”
The training took place at the premises of the Metamorphosis Foundation in Skopje and brought together representatives of civil society organizations and media. The event began with registration and informal networking, followed by an introductory session dedicated to the basics of the EU Digital Services Act ( DSA ) and its main principles of transparency, accountability and user protection, as well as its impact on freedom of expression and digital rights.
In continuation of the training, key findings from the research on the implications of the EU Digital Services Act on civil society organizations and investigative journalists in North Macedonia were presented, with a particular focus on the challenges and risks associated with digital platforms, trusted whistleblowers, and algorithmic moderation.
In the final part of the training, participants worked in groups to formulate proposals and priorities for advocacy in the context of the implementation of the EU Digital Services Act in North Macedonia.
At the very end, the trainers Prof. Dr. Elizabeta Tosheva and Prof. Dr. Ana Sekulovska J. presented the recommendations from the research and the joint conclusions and next steps.
The event had an interactive character and enabled fruitful discussion and exchange of knowledge, experiences and ideas on how civil society and media outlets can proactively engage in the process of harmonization with European digital regulations.
