The European Union will conduct an investigation to see how Google will be using users’ data. Google rejected EU’s suggestion to delay the introduction of the new privacy policy on March 1.
Google’s new privacy policy will allow user data from one Google service to be used by other services, such as YouTube or Google. It’s intended to be simpler and easier for users to understand and to realize what part of their data is used by Google. The services will retain their own privacy policies for legal reasons.
Google says they are confident that their policy is compliant with the rules of the European Union for protection of user data. But, according to Viviane Reding, the EU Justice Commissioner, Google’s new policy is not transparent enough.
The investigation will be lead by French regulators who will inspect the use of data by various services. Regulators say they are not sure whether such use of data is in accordance with the EU rules and regulations.
This investigation begins at a delicate time for both Google and the EU, because the EU is preparing new digital rules for services, such as Google and Facebook, to seek permission from users to store their data or to sell their data for targeted advertising, Reuters reported.
