GEOPOLITICS OF INFORMATION THREATS IN THE WESTERN BALKANS

Digital advertising in North Macedonia has evolved into a powerful tool
for brand visibility and consumer engagement. However, this growth has
taken place in a fragmented and opaque media environment, where
transparency and accountability are often lacking. Recent monitoring by
the Metamorphosis Foundation has revealed that major international
brands are unknowingly appearing alongside harmful narratives
published in local media outlets. Such associations represent a serious
threat to brand integrity, reputation, and consumer trust of the advertisers
appearing alongside said harmful narratives.
This position paper highlights the risks faced by brands and marketing
agencies, drawing on the findings of the project “Transparency in Digital
Advertising to Counter Foreign Information Manipulation and
Interference.” The paper does not seek to assign blame but rather to
engage the advertising industry in constructive dialogue, emphasizing the
importance of transparency, accountability, and brand safety. The
overarching goal is to ensure that advertising practices strengthen brand
value while contributing to a healthier, more credible digital ecosystem in
North Macedonia.
Through detailed analysis of market dynamics, documented case studies,
and lessons learned, the paper provides actionable insights for
advertisers, agencies, and industry associations. It concludes with
recommendations aimed at aligning advertising strategies with global
standards of corporate responsibility and ethical marketing, ensuring that
brands are protected from unintentional misplacement and reputational
harm.
