In order to install the virtual machine and test DSpace
on your computer you will need:

  • 1GB of RAM
  • 2GHz processor
  • 6GB of disk space

Virtualization software supporting OVF format is a requirement. We recommend the free desktop virtualization software VMWare Player and VirtualBOX.

If you choose to use the DSpace virtual machine in a production environment, we recommend that you use a server hardware with a virtualization software of an appropriate class. We recommend the free software for virtualization of production servers VMWare ESXi.

For continuous work of DSpace in a production environment, we recommend the following:

  • Minimum 4GB of RAM
  • 2 processor cores (minimum 2GHz)
  • Sufficient hard disk space, as needed

In addition, if you want to install DSpace on your own, download the files for localization into Macedonian and Albanian language and the installation documentation (10MB) containing explanations on how to localize DSpace.

About DSpace

DSpace is a free and open source software enabling the open sharing of content. It is mostly used by higher education and scientific-research institutions, but it can also be found in museums, national archives, state and national libraries, associations, magazines and commercial companies, all using it to manage their digital materials. It has been implemented more than 700 times in over 70 countries worldwide.

Educational and research institutions are using DSpace to create repositories based on the open access concept, enabling the public to access high-quality materials (master’s papers, dissertations, research results, papers published in scientific-research journals, presentations from international conferences etc.) without any restrictions. Advantages of open access

Here are some of the advantages of applying the open access concept:

  • greater visibility of the work of the institution and greater influence of the institution in scientific activities
  • an opportunity to precisely search for the published materials online
  • possibility to monitor the quotation rate and its increase as a result of availability
  • increased readership and opportunity to monitor the number of downloads of the deposited documents
  • time and money saved because web publishing is faster and cheaper than publishing in scientific journals
  • reduced chances for content plagiarism (plagiarism is easier to discover online)
  • long-term preservation of the published papers
  • science progress for the benefit of all (researchers, research institutions, foreign research funds, students, people, society).
