Why is volunteering important for young people and how can they be motivated to engage in volunteering? Are young people active as volunteers in the country? What areas and issues currently have priority and need young volunteers – climate change, gender equality or perhaps maintaining and promoting peace? How does volunteering need to be changed to support young people in facing future challenges?
These are just some of the questions that will be answered by the participants of the public debate “Youth and volunteering” that, organized by the Metamorphosis Foundation, will be held online on August 19, Friday, starting at 11 am.
Volunteering is often the first experience young people have with civic participation. Volunteering allows young people to determine their priorities, set their own agendas and connect with their peers or other social actors.
On the other hand, younger volunteers also face a number of challenges – they are often expected to implement older generations’ ideas, rather than making decisions themselves, which can be frustrating. In many contexts, the term “volunteer” also has a negative connotation among young people who identify with alternative terms such as “activist”, “intern” or “unpaid employee”.
Participants are the following: Marko Gjeorgievski, director of the National Agency for European Educational Programs and Mobility, Mariana Angelova, general secretary of the National Youth Council of Macedonia (NMSM), Metin Muaremi from the Center for Education and Development (CED), representative of the Volunteer Center, Skopje and the young volunteer Staniša Stankovikj.
