A panel discussion on media literacy took place on March 6, 2012, 12:00h in the EU InfoCentre of the EU Delegation on the topic ‘Reading it right: from understanding media to active citizenship’. This was the first of the series of events related to media and media literacy.

During the discussion, results from the project ‘Promotion of media literacy in education in the Republic of Macedonia’ implemented in the period from March 2009 until September 2011 were presented. The goal of this project was to assist children, adolescents and young people in the improvement of their knowledge about the role and functions of the media in democratic societies. For this purpose, 56 trainings were held for 1,100 mother tongue teachers in the elementary and secondary schools from all over Macedonia. A guide has been prepared for studying media literacy in native language tuition for Macedonian, Albanian, Serbian and Turkish language, intended for teachers who are to be holding lectures on these topics. A website has also been developed for popularization of the concept, consisting of many related information and contents related to this concept.
Three more events will be held over the next week. On March 7, the students of journalism from several universities and media organizations will attend the seminar Journalistic reporting of European Union issues ‘Covering the EU’, and a panel discussion is to be held on March 8: ‘Women in the media: challenges and opportunities in achieving balanced representation’.
