The 5th edition of the Basel Peace Forum, Switzerland has started. This forum, which is attended by celebrities, activists, academic experts, businessmen from all over the world, discusses the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on our lives, reports Portalb.mk.

“What consequences does COVID-19 hold on peace and conflict in different cities around the world? Do urban areas become more segmented, divided, and competitive? Or will a push for more joint endeavors and common care result from it?” These are some of the issues that will be discussed three days in a row at this forum, which, unlike previous years, is held online.

Bardhyl Jashari, the Executive Director of the Metamorphosis Foundation is the representative and speaker from North Macedonia. He will hold a speech at the activism panel on social networks, tomorrow, 21 January 2021 at 1 p.m.

Jashari says that in our context, activism in general, and not just digital activism, is challenging and difficult.

“Too often, and this has been even more pronounced in the past under the previous regime, people stop fighting and the activism for social justice and equality makes less sense than showing loyalty to the ruling political party, in return for a job or some other economic benefit as an incentive,” Jashari said.

To be active, people need a cause, he added, emphasizing that they only act if they really care about something.

“Social networks play an important role here. They help raise awareness and share various information and messages, all this is a critical part of activism, but it must be turned into action to promote real change. It also needs to be used in conjunction with traditional forms of activism to be successful.”

After the speeches, a workshop on this topic will be held.

This workshop will present various forms of digital activism on social networks in countries affected by conflict.

“In many countries, there have been protests during the pandemic. What are the opportunities and risks if the protests are digitized?” reads the description of the workshop.

The mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, will also address this forum.
