On May 31st – June 1st, in the framework of the EU-funded Technical Assistance to Civil Society Organisations in the Western Balkans and Türkiye (EU TACSO 3) project, the European Commission, DG NEAR, organised the EU Civil Society Forum for the Western Balkans and Türkiye 2023. The event took place on in Podgorica, Montenegro, in the Hotel Hilton and was also accessible online.

The event was intended to provide a forum for direct communications, formal and informal, between three main stakeholders: the European Union institutions working on Enlargement, civil society organisations in the Western Balkans, and Türkiye and the public authorities in the Enlargement region. The primary objectives of the Forum ‘23 were to discuss the findings of the baseline assessment against the DG NEAR Guidelines for EU Support to Civil Society in the Enlargement Region 2021 – 2027 and to contribute to an agenda for future action for civil society in the region.

Considering Metamorphosis’ portfolio and background, we were invited to participate in the Forum as a contributor to the Breakout session: Use of the digital tools to increase public engagement. On behalf of Metamorphosis Foundation, Mila Josifovska Danilovska, Manager of the programmes for Social accountability and Human rights online delivered a presentation on this session, highlighting the importance of providing the opportunity to citizens to engage digitally in public processes and sharing best practices from North Macedonia and the Western Balkan region.

“When employing technology in any aspect of civic participation we should always take into consideration that the digital tools are created based on the needs of the citizens, and that they are secure, accessible for every category of citizens, easy to navigate, and do not provide the space for compromising the integrity of the institution or undermining any human rights. ” – she shared.
