As part of the ACTION SEE project, seven representatives of civil society organizations from the Balkans participated in the “Annual Conference on Green Crimes and Ecological Justice”, which was held on May 24-25, 2023 at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands.
Supported representatives of civil society organizations from Kosovo, Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina participate in international conferences to present the results of their work, to improve their skills of networking, to establish new contacts, but also to benefit from new knowledge and advocacy processes.
In recent decades, ecological crime has become one of the largest criminal activities in the world with devastating impacts on the environment and great costs for future generations. The impact on the living environment is illustrated by the rapid disappearance of tropical forests, heavy pollution, climate change and mass extinction of species. Ecological crime has become a global problem, and therefore should be anticipated in social and scientific thinking. Studies in green criminology, environmental sociology, environmental law, political ecology, and conservation studies, among other disciplines, have begun to investigate and deal with environmental crimes and damages. Joining and combining these approaches is of fundamental importance to understanding and thinking about the ecological challenges we face in the 21st century.
